In an arrangement for the continuous monitoring and measurement of the concentration of chlorinated hydrocarbons, in waste air or waste water (effluent), a heating zone is provided in the direct proximity of which there is arranged a body, for example a wire, of copper or copper oxide. The chlorinated hydrocarbons are supplied to the heating zone in admixture with air. A photodetector (light detector) sensitive to the light emitted from the copper halide formed, for example a photodiode, generates signals corresponding to the intensity of the emitted light. The measurement is by comparison with the stored calibration values for the concentrations.
