In this detector, a plunger-type armature (4) of high magnetic permeability, which is displaceable within a measuring coil (6), can be moved by an actuator (piston (1)). Depending on the position of the plunger-type armature (4), a different coil inductance is produced which is processed in a connected electronic evaluating circuit (10). To achieve particularly simple temperature compensation and to obtain a possibility for checking the functional capability and the operating capability of the position detector without changing the constructional coupling and without arbitrary change in the position of the actuator (piston (1)), the measuring coil (6) is arranged with a constructionally identical compensation coil (7) in an alternating-current bridge (W). The inductance of at least one of the two coils (6, 7) can be varied by mechanical or electrical means (test armature (11)) independently of the position of the plunger-type armature (4) in the measuring coil (6). <IMAGE>
