To determine the age of writings, small samples are taken and brought into solution a number of times. Both the amount of solvent and the dissolution time are prescribed exactly. Dissolution can be accelerated with the aid of ultrasound. The 5 to 7 solutions are applied one after the other onto an HPTLC plate according to known rules. This is followed by the quantitative evaluation of the subsequent high-performance thin layer chromatography with the aid of a TLC scanner and the evaluation with the aid of a laboratory calculator by mathematically calculating a numerical value for the gradient of the resulting curve, an exponential function, which is to be viewed as an indicator for the age of the writing.
