Handrails for staircases made entirely of wood usually have to be manufactured individually for each staircase. They are very expensive and are not suitable for DIY. The present invention provides a handrail which exploits the modular construction principle and eliminates the abovementioned disadvantages. As shown in the drawing, alternately in each case one handrail sleeve and one ball piece, both consisting of wood, are lined up in a row on a bracing wire. In each case one pre-bent serrated lock washer or tooth lock washer is inserted into the dome-shaped ends of the handrail sleeve. The ball pieces themselves are screwed onto the handrail standards by means of transverse bores. The entire unit is then braced together from the ends, the tooth lock washers then constituting positively locking connections. The simplicity of the design and the mass-produced parts used render the handrail, and thus the entire staircase, an excellent item for DIY and for cost-effective production.
