PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a thin magnetic layer retaining sufficient strength by arranging a large quantity of magnetic powder on the side of a face opposite to the head in a coated film. CONSTITUTION:Besides a magnet for magnetic powder orientation, at least one magnetic pole, for instance, a pair of asymmetric magnetic poles 11 are provided, and a magnetic field 7 having magnetic field internsity gradient in the direction of film thickness is applied in the initial stage of magnetic powder orientation processing. After concentrating the magnetic powder 3 in the side of a face opposite to the head of a magnetic recording medium by the magnetic field, the magnetic field is removed, and conventional manufacturing process is followed thereafter. Thereby, a large quantity of magnetic powder 3 is placed in the side of the face oppositeto the head, and as the thickness of the film is not reduced substantially, strength nearly equal to a magnetic recording medium having uniform content of magnetic powder and having sufficient strength can be retained.
