PRODUCTION OF TRACTION DRIVE FLUID

PURPOSE:To obtain at low cost a fluid satisfying the requirements of physical properties with respect to a traction drive fluid, by decomposing a by-product produced in alkylating an alkylbenzene with styrene and then conducting the nuclear hydrogenation of the aromatic ring of the decomposition product. CONSTITUTION:A starting material which will be mentioned later is decomposed in the presence of hydrogen at a reaction temp. of 300-500 deg.C under a hydrogen pressure of 20-200kg/cm<2>.g. The aromatic ring of a decomposition product having a boiling point of 450 deg.C or below out of the decomposition product thus obtd., or a decomposition product obtd. by adjusting the viscosity of the decomposition product thus obtd. to 10-350cSt (40 deg.C) is subjected to nuclear hydrogenation in the presence of a catalyst having a nuclear hydrogenating power. The starting material is a fraction composed mainly of compds. having four or more aromatic rings which is a by-product obtd. in producing an alpha- methylbenzylalkylbenzene through the alkylation of a compd. selected from among 7-10C alkylbenzenes or a mixture thereof with styrene in the presence of an acid catalyst.
