Perforated or unperforated wrappers for smoking rods are provided with a coating of a porosity-reducing compositions that provides low porosity during manufacture and storage but that allows the porosity to increase significantly as the burning tip approaches. Any perforations are preferably below 100 mu m in diameter and the composition preferably comprises a fatty alcohol or a fatty acid, salt or ester that melts below 150 DEG C together with, at most, about 20% binder.
