Prior to exposure of the film (7), the intensity of the X-rays (6) is adjusted on the basis of a measurement after transmission through the subject (8). The detector (1) on a mechanical carrier (2) is positioned between the subject (8) and film (7) by means of a control unit (3) connected to the X-ray generator (4) which supplies independently adjustable current and voltage to the tube (5). If the measured radiation falls short of a previously established empirical threshold, the voltage is increased accordingly, and conversely: excessive irradiation is counteracted by redn. of the current or voltage supplied.
