<p>An inert building material having high strength, high thermal insulation, low water absorption, and very low weight comprises bloated pellets (11) of bloating clay which whilst still hot, soft and sticky are compacted together into a mass under their own weight or by the application of a positive pressure so that their vitrifying skins fuse where they touch but remain intact and continue to enclose their foamed cores, the mass then being allowed to cool and harden. The mass may constitute an individual building block (10), tile, or pipe, or may constitute a slab (33) which is then cut into individual blocks (10).</p> |
