A process for modifying the genome of a microorganism by integrating therein a DNA sequence of at least 15 bases, characterised in that the integrated sequence does not include a gene and in that the number of different essential genes in the genome, and the functions of the proteins which can be expressed by these genes, are unchanged by the modification. The fact that the integrated sequence is "silent" allows the provenance of a micro-organism thus modified to be detected by the modifier only.
