PURPOSE:To perform a character recognition more exactly by deciding a recognition candidate priority for similar characters, for which it is difficult to identify them from their shapes alone by adding to them a possibility by which they can becomes characters that can be placed just prior to a punctuation. CONSTITUTION:An input picture obtained from a picture input part 1 is segmented in a rectangle by one character, and is divided into rectangular areas of 4X4, and the area of a character part is found as a feature quantity. At a recognizing part 4, a distance (di) between the feature quantity and each feature quantity of n-number of characters accumulated in advance in a dictionary 5, is found with a prescribed expression, and a recognition candidate character in an order of the character having the smallest distance. At a punctuation connecting character deciding part 6, a connec tion factor (ki) on a table 7 is multiplied by the distance (di) for the candidate charac ter of the recognition object character just prior to the recognition object character in which the candidate character ranked at the first position from the recognizing part 4. A candidate order is changed in the order of the character having the smallest distance resulted from a recalculation. The connection factor (ki) is regulated so that the higher the possibility to become the character just prior to the punctuation of each character is, the smaller the value of the character becomes.
