PURPOSE:To automatically set an address of a terminal equipment without giving effect onto the efficiency of data transmission without giving any hindrance of the miniaturization of a terminal equipment by using the number of terminal confirmation signals outputted from terminal equipments whose address is already set at the upperstream side of each terminal equipment in response to an address set command from a center unit so as to set the address. CONSTITUTION:The center unit 1 sends an address set command and discriminates whether or not the address setting of all terminal equipments is finished depending on the presence of a new terminal confirming signal to the sending of the address setting command. Every time terminal equipments T1-Tn receive the address setting command, the terminal confirming signal of each terminal device sequentially from the upperstream terminal equipment is sent, a terminal confirming signal outputted from the upperstream terminal equipment is counted and the address of its own terminal equipment is set based on the count. A next terminal equipment connection switch 10 at the address setting of its own terminal equipment closes first the transmission line between the its own terminal equipment and a terminal equipment adjacent to the lower stream side. Thus, all terminal equipments are subject to address setting sequentially from a terminal equipment adjacent to the center unit automatically without using the address setting switch.
