PURPOSE:To improve the corrosion resistance of a metallic material by forming a plasma-sprayed coating layer consisting of ceramic powder and metallic powder on the surface of the metallic material by plasma spraying under low pressure and by treating the layer with arc in an atmosphere under low pressure so as to seal the pores in the layer. CONSTITUTION:A material for plasma spraying prepd. by uniformly mixing ceramic powder 2 such as Cr3C2 powder with metallic powder 3 such as 25Ni-Cr alloy powder is plasma-sprayed under low pressure on the surface of a metallic material 1 made of carbon steel to form a plasma-sprayed coating layer 4. The metallic material 1 is then put in an atmosphere under low pressure and arc 9 is emitted toward the surface of the layer 4 with an arc electrode 8 so as to seal the pores 6 in the layer 4. The pores 6 in the surface part of the layer 4 are vanished by the melting of the metallic powder 3, and the layer 4 is made dense, so the corrosion, wear and heat resistances of the metallic material 1 are improved.
