PURPOSE:To eliminate erroneous transfer of a cob dish and misregistration at a forming point, by temporarily pushing up the cob dish on a magazine and transferring the cob dish onto a transfer arm. CONSTITUTION:A cob dish 44 in the form of an inverted truncated cone carrying an optical glass material is placed on a magazine 16 and carried in a preheating furnace 18 to heat the material 17. A piston rod 47 of a pushing up cylinder 46 is then moved upward to engage the outer peripheral surface of a pushing up part 48 with a tapered hole 55 of the cob dish 44. The cob dish 44 is then pushed up on the magazine 16 and a transfer arm 43 is advanced to align the center line of a cob dish supporting part 45 with the center line of the piston rod 47 through a groove 50. The piston rod 47 is then moved downward to place the cob dish 44 on the supporting part 45 of the transfer arm 43. The cob dish 44 held on the transfer arm 43 is then transferred into a normal heating furnace 19 to heat and soften the material 17 at a temperature above the glass transition temperature, transferred to a forming point 22 of a forming chamber 20 through the transfer arm 43 and then formed.
