PURPOSE:To obtain optically anisotropic carbonaceous pitch, suitable for producing carbonaceous materials having a high strength and elastic modulus, by thermally decomposing and polycondensing a raw material for producing pitch, to form a partially optical anisotropic phase, depositing and separating the phase at a specific temperature and thermally decomposing the phase. CONSTITUTION:A raw material for producing pitch, e.g. heavy hydrocarbon oil, tar, pitch, etc., is thermally decomposed and polycondensed, preferably at about 400-440 deg.C to form a partially optically anisotropic phase, which is then deposited and separated at a temperature, e.g. about <=400 deg.C, hardly increasing the molecular weight of the phase. The resultant phase is then heat-treated, preferably at about 390-440 deg.C to afford the aimed carbonaceous pitch containing about >=90% optically anisotropic phase.
