NEW MATERIAL:The compound of formula I (m is integer of 1-8). EXAMPLE:5-Ethyl-2-(3,4-difluorophenyl)pyrimidine. USE:A component of liquid crystal material for liquid crystal display element, capable of lowering threshold working voltage of a liquid crystal cell and providing a liquid crystal composition having balanced characteristics required in liquid crystal material (e.g. usable temperature range, working voltage, response, etc.). PREPARATION:The objective compound of formula I can be produced by (1) reacting the compound of formula II with methanol and hydrogen chloride to obtain the compound of formula III, (2) introducing ammonia to ethanol solution of the compound of formula III and (3) cyclizing the resultant compound of formula IV together with the compound of formula V in the presence of a basic catalyst. The titled compound has high compatibility with various liquid crystal compounds, decreases the viscosity of a liquid crystal mixture because of its low viscosity, increases the dielectric anisotropy of a liquid crystal mixture and lowers the driving voltage of a liquid crystal display element.
