PURPOSE:To make generated tones such as an error tone, an end tone, and a telephone ring-back tone easy to hear even when ambient noises are large and to reduce the volume of tones properly and make them easy to hear proper ly in a silent atmosphere by detecting the ambient noises and controlling the volume of generated tones automatically according to the detected noise level. CONSTITUTION:In case a generated tone is outputted, an automatic generated tone control mode is set on facsimile equipment 1 and the level of ambient noises is detected through a microphone 2. Then, the gain of an amplifier 4 is controlled automatically corresponding to the detected noise level according to a predetermined amplification factor. This measurement is carried out for a certain time and the generated tone is outputted from a speaker 5 at the time of the measurement is finished, so that the equipment returns to a stand-by state. At this time, the gain of the amplifier 4 is reset to its initial value.
