NEW MATERIAL:A compound shown by formula I [R<1> is 1-12C alkyl or group shown by formula II (R<2> is 1-8C alkyl; ring shown by formula III is trans 1,4-disubstituted cyclohexane ring)]. EXAMPLE:2-[2'-(trans-4''-Methylcyclohexyl)ethyl]-5,6-dicyano-inda-ne. USE:A liquid crystal display element substance having high positive dielectric anisotropy, improved compatibility with other liquid crystal, chemical stability, suitable for lowering drive voltage and useful for display of watch, electronic calculator, automobile instrument panel, high-density dot matrix of computer terminal etc. PREPARATION:A compound shown by formula IV is reacted with indane-2- carboxylic acid chloride, reduced and reacted with bromine to give a dibromo derivative shown by formula V. Further this compound is reacted with copper cyanide to give a compound shown by formula I.
