PURPOSE:To prevent a gear noise and lengthen the life of a synchronous mechanism, by controlling a variable transmission operating device for a large-sized vehicle, as being gentle in the rise of the shift operating force at the high speed stage select position, and being steep in the low speed stage select position. CONSTITUTION:This operating device is constituted at the first cylinder 2 for shift operation, set on the upper surface of a variable transmission 1, the second cylinder 3 for select operation, and four solenoid operated valves 5-8 adapted to feed/exhaust the compressed air of an air tank 4 into/from said two cylinders 2, 3. These cylinders 2, 3 are double acting type cylinders, each of which is formed with a pair of pressure chambers, and these pressure chambers are connected to the air feed ports 5a-8a of the solenoid operated values 5-8, respectively. The exhaust ports 5b, 6b of the solenoid operated valves 5, 6 connected to the cylinder 2, are connected to a variable throttle valve 13 by a route 12. This variable throttle valve 13 is equipped with an actuator, for controlling the throttle opening of the throttle valve 13, according to the speed change stage.
