PURPOSE:To improve measuring accuracy for molten metal surface level by inserting one pair of electrodes into the molten metal and measuring electric resistance between one pair of electrodes, which changes in accordance with fluctuation of vertical position of the molten metal surface, to detect the molten metal surface level. CONSTITUTION:As detecting method for the molten metal surface, one pair of electrodes 2, 4 are submerged into the molten metal 11 and a lead-wire 6 is connected between electrodes 2, 4 to measure the electric resistance between them by an electric resistance meter 8. In the other way, the molten metal surface detector 1 uses electrodes 2, 4 arranged at both sides of a furnace consisting of monolithic refractories, in which the molten metal 11 is held, and detects the molten metal level by using also the lead-wire 6 and the electric resistance meter 8. In this method and apparatus, the molten metal surface level is measured automatically and accurately and automatical control of the pressurizing apparatus is executed.
