PURPOSE:To automate length measurement by measuring the length with an electronic measuring tape, and storing, reading, and arithmetic processing it. CONSTITUTION:When the tape 7 is drawn out of a case 6, through holes 15 formed in the tape 7 pass under the light emitting element of a projector 13 in order. A light emitting device 14 photodetects light and outputs a photodetection signal at every time. The waveform of this signal is shaped and the signal is supplied to and counted by an up/down counter. Its counted value is supplied to a measured length display device 8 through a decoder to display the drawn-out length of the tape 7 numerically. When the tape 7 moves in such a direction that it is stored in the case 6, the reverse operation is performed and the current drawn-out length of the tape 7 is displayed 8 all the time. Then, when a memory switch 9 is pressed every time length is measured, the counted value of the counter is displayed 10. Thus, a measurement is taken and the case 6 is carried back and connected to a personal computer. Subsequently, desired arithmetic and display processing is carried out by a length measurement processor.
