PURPOSE:To prevent the trouble of corrosion of a distillation system, by controlling the operation temp. of the distillation system of a coal liquefaction product. CONSTITUTION:A liquefaction product produced by hydrogenation of coal is fed into a gas-liq. separation column 3. Naphtha and a part of the middle distillate which distilled from the top of the gas-liq. separation column 3 is treated at 130-220 deg.C in an atmospheric distillation column 4. The remainder of the middle distillate, a heavy distillate and a residue which was obtained from the bottom of the gas-liq. separation column 3 is treated at 260-340 deg.C in a steam distillation column. Amine hydrochloride which is produced in the step of the coal liquefaction reaction is thermally decomposed in the distillation system. The corrosion due to HCl thus produced occurs exclusively at a temperature ranging from 220-260 deg.C. Therefore, the distillation system is operated so as to avoid such a temperature range.
