PURPOSE:To constitute the titled device so that a display of each part of a picture can be read distinctly in the same way, even in case of a large-sized liquid crystal display device, especially, whose size in the upper and lower directions is long, by applying a high voltage and a low voltage to a part whose visual angle is small, and a part whose visual angle is large, respectively. CONSTITUTION:When no voltage is applied in the upper and lower substrate surfaces, in case of a TN type liquid crystal display device in which liquid crystal molecule orienting directions are orthogonal, when an applied voltage is made high, an angle thetabecomes smaller, and when the applied voltage is made low, the angle theta becomes larger. As a matter of fact, in case when a visual angle is large, a threshold voltage by which a display part comes to be seen darkly becomes lower, and in case the visual angle is small, the voltage by which the display part is seen darkly becomes higher. In each part of the display picture, a difference of how a display image is seen goes to a problem, in case a size in the upper and lower directions of the display device is large, generally, the visual angle is large in the upper part of the display device, and the visual angle is small in the lower part. In such a way, when the angle thetais made to coincide with or approach a visual angle phi as much as possible,m in accordance with a variation of the visual angle phi in each part of the liquid crystal display element, the liquid crystal display comes to be seen distinctly.
