Plastics represent a considerable hazard in the event of fire, not only due to their combustibility, but also due to the fire side effects associated with the fire. These are, in particular, the formation of smoke, possibly with liberation of harmful or even toxic gases, and the dripping of burning plastic material. In order to inhibit the combustibility and burning behaviour, and to reduce the evolution of smoke and the formation of drips, the invention proposes a protective material to be added to the plastic, formed by a mixture product of organic fibres with secondary alkaline earth metal phosphates and/or tertiary alkali or alkaline earth metal phosphates and burnt (caustic) and/or hydrated (slaked) lime. Also proposed are processes for the preparation of this protective material by wet or dry means.
