In a water heater with a plastic tank, a water heater electric heating element assembly (1) has a mounting plug (2) in which a sheathed heating element (15) is mounted. The heating element (15) has two generally parallel legs (17,18) and a bight portion (19). A well (40), mounted at one end in the mounting plug (2), projects along and substantially parallel to the legs (17, 18) in heat exchange relation therewith. A thermal cutoff (50) in the well (40) is electrically connected in series with one end of a two-ended electric resistance element in the sheathed heating element (15). A thermally conductive bridge is mechanically and thermally connected to and between the legs (17, 18) of the sheathed heating element (15) and the well (40) containing the thermal cutoff (50), which is mounted against the inner wall of the well (40). The legs (17,18) of the sheathed heating element (15) are bent back upon themselves, and a bracket (37), connected to the two reaches of at least one leg, permits relative axial movement but prevents lateral movement of the reaches of the legs (17,18) with respect to one another. The mounting plug (2) is made of solid copper or copper alloy, as is the sheath (16) and well (40). A molded closure (68) has holes through which terminal pin (47) from the thermal cutoff (50) and a terminal pin (30), from one end of the resistance element (15), extend. The molded closure (68) has a boss (74) with a blind hole (75) into which a terminal pin (29) connected to the other end of the heating element (15) and to another terminal pin (49) of the thermal cutoff (50), extends. |
