It comprises a circulation unit which can be lowered down a well. It contains a pump which pumps water through a filter from the intake, to remove metallic and organic substances. The water then passes through chambers which contain a basic material e.g. linertone. The chambers are separated by perforated walls. A control unit measures the degree of acidity and therefore controls the duration of passage of the water through the unit so as to give the desired pH.
