PURPOSE:To obtain an acrylonitrile solution of purified titled compound useful as a copolymer component of As resin, etc., on an industrials scale at a low cost, by using acrylonitrile as a reaction solvent in the imidation of a maleic acid monoanilide compound with acetic anhydride. CONSTITUTION:One or more kinds of maleic acid monoanilide compounds selected from maleic acid monoanilide or its derivative having substituent group on the phenyl group are made to react with acetic anhydride in acrylonitrile used as a reaction solvent in the presence of a catalyst and more preferably in the copresence of a cocatalyst. The reaction mixture is washed with an aqueous solution of an alkali having an alkali concentration of preferably 10-20wt% at <=10 deg.C to easily remove the by-produced acetic acid and excess acetic anhydride and the catalyst from the reaction liquid while preventing the loss of the solvent. The objective acrylonitrile solution of the titled compound useful as a copolymer component to improve the heat-resistance of AS resin and ABS resin, etc., can be economically produced by this process.
