PURPOSE:To improve the brake effect of a vehicle, by a method wherein an on-off valve is located in an intake air passage, and the opening of the on-off valve is decreased during exhaust brake operation. CONSTITUTION:In an engine having an exhaust brake valve situated in an exhaust pipe 28, an intake air brake valve 30 is mounted in an intake air pipe 24. A computer 32 decreases the opening of an intake air brake valve 30 through operation of an electromagnetic valve 34 during exhaust brake operation. This constitution enables improvement of the brake effect of a vehicle through increase of a pumping loss.
