PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful as a synthetic intermediate for organic compound, by cyanizing a 2,3-dihalogeno-1,4-naphthoquinone derivative, adding a cuprous halide to free cyanogen compounds and removing the compounds as copper cyanate. CONSTITUTION:A 2,3-dihalogeno-1,4-naphthoquinone derivative is made to react with a cyanizing agent such as sodium cyanate by conventional method. After completion of the reaction, free cyanogen compounds such as sodium cyanate remaining in the reaction mixture is added with a solution of sodium hydroxide and then with a cuprous halide (e.g. cuprous chloride). The components are made to react with each other at 0-80 deg.C, preferably 10-30 deg.C to obtain the objective compound. The amount of cuprous halide is 1-10mol, preferably 1-2mol per 1mol of the cyanogen compound. EFFECT:Harmful free cyanogen compound remaining in the reaction mixture can be recovered without causing decomposition of the objective substance.
