PURPOSE:To improve the speed of printing by making the bidirectional printing possible, by a method wherein an ink ribbon is preliminarily wound up reversely by a blank feed amount of ink ribbon prior to the bidirectional printing and wound up in the regular direction during printing. CONSTITUTION:On a reverse directional printing, the length of an ink ribbon 31 necessary for the reverse directional printing is calculated by CPU 13 and the printing start position is calculated. A carriage 4 is transferred to the calculated printing start position by a carriage position control means C and the ink ribbon 31 is reversely wound up by the calculated blank feed amount with the first ink ribbon winding means 1 while the carriage is being transferred. When the carriage 4 has reached the printing start position, the carriage 4 is reversely (in the left direction) transferred and a thermal head 1 is pressed by the ink ribbon 31. If the thermal head 1 is driven with a head drive circuit 2, the ink ribbon 31 is successively wound up in the regular direction (in the right direction) with the second ink ribbon winding means R and the reverse directional printing is started. The ink ribbon 31 is successively used in the left direction. |
