PURPOSE:To prevent surface oxidation of formed carbon fiber, to improve flow contraction effect and to reduce the diameter of formed fiber, by using N2 or Ar gas having a specific purity in the cooling and forming of pitch fiber in a process for spinning a carbon fiber from molten pitch. CONSTITUTION:Molten pitch is sprayed through a rotary nozzle 5, converted to wooly carbon fiber 1 at an outer wall 7 and supplied with hot N2 or Ar gas 15 having a purity of >=99.99% from above. The fiber 11 is driven downward and collected on a pallet 12 without causing surface oxidation of the fiber. The rotational speed of the nozzle 5 can be increased to >=5,000r.p.m. to increase centrifugal force and flow contraction effect. A fiber having a diameter of <=5mum can be formed by this process.
