Decontamination agent for use, for example, in the keeping of medical preparations, in ostomy bags, in latrines or stables. The agent can have the form of a powder or an aqueous solution and contains, as main ingredient, a hydroxy methane sulphonic acid salt, advantageously the sodium salt of hydroxy methane sulphonic acid. The powder-formed agent is advisedly the hydroxy methane sulphonic acid salt alone, while the aqueous agent, which advantageously contains around 20-40 per cent by weight of active main ingredient, can furthermore contain optional additives, such as 0.001-1 per cent by weight of surface tension lowering agent, which advantageously is cetylpyridinium chloride, and around 1-10 per cent by weight of iron or zinc salt for binding of hydrogen sulphide. Advantageous iron and zinc salts are iron sulphate and zinc chloride, respectively.
