PURPOSE:To improve the response characteristics and durability of a display element by constituting an opposite electrode of a metallic thin film and forming a conductive protection film at least on the exposed surface having no opposite electrode on the surface of the thin film. CONSTITUTION:The display element is obtained by oppositely arranging a substrate 1 provided with a display pole 2 and a substrate 3 provided with an opposite pole 4 and a background material 5 via an annular spacer 6, storing an electrolyte 8 in an inside space 7, connecting the lead terminal 9a of the display pole 2 to the edge part of the substrate side and then connecting the lead terminal 9b of the opposite pole 4 to the edge part of the board 1 side via conductive paste 10. An opposite electrode 41 constituting the opposite pole 4 consists of a metallic thin film and provided with a conductive protection film 43 on the whole surface of the thin film. Any material for protecting the metallic thin from corrosion due to the electrolyte can be adopted as the protection film 43 and conductive oxide such as indium oxide, tin oxide or composite oxide of these oxides will be used. Consequently, a display element prevented from easy deterioration in spite of long use and improved at its response characteristics and durability can be obtained.
