PURPOSE:To improve response characteristics and durability by forming a conductive protection film at least on an exposed surface having no opposite electrode on the inside of a metallic substrate and holding an electrolyte between both poles. CONSTITUTION:An opposite pole 8 is arranged oppositely to a display pole 2 through an annular spacer 10, the electrolyte 12 is stored in its inner space 11, a lead terminal 13a of the display pole 2 is connected to the edge part of the substrate 1 side. Further, a lead terminal 13b of the opposite pole 8 is connected to the edge part of the substrate 1 side via conductive paste 14. In addition, the conductive protection film 15 is formed on the whole surface of the inside of the metallic substrate 5 to be used also as the opposite electrode. Any material for protecting the metallic substrate 6 from corrosion due to the electrolyte can be adopted as the protection film 15 and conductive oxide such as indium oxide, tin dioxide or composite oxide of these oxides will be used. Consequently, a display element prevented from easy deterioration in spite of long use and improved at its response characteristics and durability can be obtained.
