PURPOSE:To prevent the defect of an end surface of a porous member, by forming an outwardly diverging tapering surface at an end portion of a bearing surface of the porous member, and thereby avoiding local stress concentration on the bearing surface when a shaft comes into contact with the bearing surface. CONSTITUTION:A porous gas bearing includes a housing 2 provided with a hollow charging chamber communicated through a charging hole to a charging means and a porous member 3 provided inside the housing 2 in such a manner as to close the charging chamber and form a bearing surface 3a. The bearing surface 3a of the porous member 3 has an end portion formed with an outwardly diverging tapering surface 7. An end surface 3b of the porous member 3 is so treated as to prevent the leakage of a gas. When a shaft 1 comes into contact with the bearing surface 3a, the tapering surface 7 at the end portion of the bearing surface 3a acts to avoid stress concentration at a boundary 8, thereby preventing the defect due to the stress concentration of the porous member 3.
