PURPOSE:To improve the resistance of quartz fiber to the ageing corrosion and fatigue under high temp. and stress conditions by passing a mixture of borazine and an inert gas through a quartz tube, and coating a film by the CVD method on the quartz fiber which has been drawn at high temps. CONSTITUTION:The coating device consists of a furnace 1 used for melting and drawing an optical quartz preform 2 which is heated by a heat element 3 connected to an energy source. The gaseous borazine/argon mixture is introduced into a duct 8 sufficiently before the position of a susceptor 11 with respect to the movement of a fiber 7. The glass preform 2 is heated in the furnace 1, and drawn into the fiber 7. The fiber 7 is sent into the duct 8 through a duct 6, and passed through the susceptor 11 which has been heated to the temp. appropriate for thermally decomposing the borazine component in the gaseous mixture supplied from a bottle 15. Consequently, the fiber 7 is coated with the thin film of boron nitride, cooled, and finally collected by a spool 17.
