PURPOSE:To prevent objects to be measured from producing bruises in a numerically controlled machine tool by providing movably a probe to the head for contact detection in three dimensional directions and positioning it in a specified position usually with an elastic holding means. CONSTITUTION:A touch unit 25 to be attached to a main spindle is electrically conductive through lead wires 40 in such a way that a plurality of balls 27 and 28 are fixed in a hollow chamber 26 opposingly with each other, and between them the flange section 30 of the supporting shaft 29 fixing a probe 24 are installed movably in the axial direction and slantably and pushed by a spring 35 in a projecting direction through a ball 34. And since the detection signals of high speed contact in radial directions are output, even if the probe overruns due to the delay of a response in a feed system, the probe 24 is inclined using one of balls 27 as a fulcrum, and pressed bruises, bends or the like to the probe 24 will not be produced. When travelling in the axial direction, the probe 24 is retracted rebelling against the spring 35. The feed rate in contact detection can, thus, be improved as much as possible.
