PURPOSE:To increase the resolution of a display image by making phosphor attached and formed in matrix-form on a faceplate with white color phosphor. CONSTITUTION:A faceplate 1 acts as an anode and has phosphor 2 attached and formed at a matrix structure of 4X4 at the inner side of itself. The phosphor 2 is made from white color phosphor emitting white color light. A base plate glass 3 is attached to the back face of the plate 1 through a spacer glass 4 and the space formed by the plate 1 and the glasses 3, 4 is sustained in vacuum. A plug, to which are attached high voltage and low voltage pins for impressing high voltage and low voltage upon an anode and a cathode respectively, is attached to the back face of a base plate glass 5. Each voltage being impressed from the high voltage and low voltage pins, thermoelectrons fly out of a filament, collide against the phosphor 2 and cause it to emit white color light. At this time, the phosphor 2 becomes a light emitting unit and the resolution of an image can be increased.
