PURPOSE:To recognize correctly a character pattern by coordinate-converting a character pattern having distortion such as a hand-written character with a Hough transformation and a Affine transformation. CONSTITUTION:A document 1 read by an image scanner 2 is sent to a character shaping processing part 33. For the document 1, the stroke is extracted concerning the character pattern which is cut and dirty in an Hough transformation part 33a. In a representative segment determining part 33b, the representative segment of the document 1 is determined. From the stroke segment extracted by a circumscribed squardrilateral arithmetic part 33c, the circumscribed squardrilateral is obtained. The character pattern in an obtained circumscribed squardrilateral is Affine transformation by an Affine transformation part 33d and mapped to a prescribed rectangle area.
