7-Benzofuryl chloro-methyl acetyl aceto-acetate cpds. of formula (I) for pharmaceutical use as hypo-tensive agents, are made by (a) reacting one equiv. of 7-benzofurane carbaldehyde with one equiv. of the aceto-acetate of R1 at ambient temp. using a solvent of reduced polarity satd. with anhydrous HCl, with agitation ofr 25-40 hours; (b) removing the solvent under reduced pressure; and (c) re-crystallising the cpd. (I) from isopropanol.
