PURPOSE:To obtain the titled compound useful s a raw material for producing aldehyde sugar, by reacting a specific sugar derivative with mercaptan in the presence of both a boron trifluoride complex and a boric acid triester. CONSTITUTION:A sugar derivative (e.g., 2', 3', 4', 6'-tetra-O-benzyl-D- glucopyranose, etc.,) having hemiacetal bond at the C-1 position is reacted with a mercaptan (preferably ethylmercaptan) in an organic solvent (preferably dichloromethane) in the presence of both a boron trifluoride complex (preferably boron trifluoride ether complex) and a boric acid triester (preferably boric acid trimethyl ester) and preferably molecular sieve at 0-30 deg.C to give the aimed compound.
