PURPOSE:To aim at preventing erroneous paper supply due to a slip of a paper feed roller on the surface of a paper sheet, by driving a paper feed roller, intermittently on a predetermined cycle. CONSTITUTION:A paper feed roller 9 abuts against and rolls on the upper surface of stacked paper sheets 18 which are therefore fed out and are separated from each other by means of a separating roller 8 and a friction pad 15. Further, a sheet detecting sensor 6 is arranged upstream of the separating roller 8. In this arrangement, the paper feed roller 9 is driven intermittently to repeat a set cycle including a rotation and a stop, and is controlled such that the drive of the paper feed roller 9 is terminated when the sheet sensor 6 delivers a detection signal. As a result, even though the paper feed roller 9 slips due to instant overloading, static friction is effected when the rotation of the subsequent intermittent drive is initiated, thereby it is possible to surely feed out the paper sheets 18.
