PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the aimed compound in high yield, by specifying the molar ratio of raw materials formamide to alpha-hydroxycarbonyl compound and reaction temperature and carrying out reaction in ammonia gas atmosphere in producing the titled compound from the above-mentioned raw materials. CONSTITUTION:A compound (HC) expressed by formula I (R1 and R2 are H, saturated alkyl, saturated cycloalkyl or aryl) is reacted with a formamide (FA) at <=2, prefeably 1-2 molar ratio (FA/HC) at 100-170 deg.C, preferably 130-140 deg.C, preferably under 5-15kgf/cm<2>G pressure of ammonia gas pressure in the reaction system in ammonia gas atmosphere to afford the aimed compound useful as an intermediate particularly for antiulcer agent in the digestive systems or curing agent for epoxy resins. the aimed compound is advantageously obtained as follows; The yield is high even if the molar ratio (FA/HC) is <=2. Since the FA is not used in large excess, recovering operation accompanied by decomposition of the FA becomes unnecessary.
