PURPOSE:To obtain a rotary head type magnetic recording and reproducing device which can execute simultaneously recording and reproduction of plural cassettes, by providing plural lead grooves in the peripheral direction on the side face of a fixed cylinder of a drum, so that magnetic tapes from plural pieces of cassettes can run along the corresponding lead grooves of the drum through the respective tape running system. CONSTITUTION:Two sets of tape running systems 40 consisting of a fixed guide pin 3, a tension pin 4, a guide roller 5, an inclined pin 6, a capstan shaft 10 and a pinch roller 11 are provided on both sides of a drum 37. A magnetic tape 31 of a cassette 30 of one side is set to one tape running system 40, and run at a winding angle of 90 deg. along one side of the side face of the drum 37. Also, with respect to the drum 37, a magnetic tape 33 of a cassette 32 of the other side is set to the other tape running system 40, and run at a winding angle of 90 deg. along the other side of the side face of the drum 37. On the side face of the lower cylinder 37b of the drum 37, a lead groove 38 and a lead grove 39 are provided within a range extending from 0 deg. to 90 deg. and within a range extending from 180 deg. to 270 deg., respectively, and to the upper cylinder 37a of the drum 37, a pair of magnetic heads 8 are installed at an interval of 180 deg..
