PURPOSE:To produce a swellable substance having a high water absorptivity and a capability of reversely absorbing or desorbing water, by adding ammonium compound and water to acrylic acid and polymerizing the monomer in the absence of any crosslinking agent under specified conditions. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous solution containing an ammonium compound selected from among ammonium hydroxide and ammonium (bi)carbonate is added to acrylic acid to form a solution of a pH of 3-9, and the monomer is polymerized at 106-160 deg.C in the absence of any crosslinking agent in the presence of an initiator such as benzoyl peroxide or acetone peroxide.
