The apparatus comprises a transport device for the sheets which is arranged to make the sheets pass continuously in front of an optical measuring system with illumination means, an arrangement of photo-electric detectors and an electronic system for evaluating the measured values in order to create a signal for acceptance or rejection of the sheets. The transport device includes at least two systems of endless belts arranged one behind the other in the direction of progress of the sheets and offset transversally so as each to leave longitudinal strips of the sheet free, thus allowing reading of the juxtaposed areas on the longitudinal strips left free by the second, respectively the first, system of belts on both sides of the sheet so that the whole width of the sheet is picked up on both sides in the optical system.
