PURPOSE:To obtain a high-purity, water-soluble sulfonated polystyrene in high yields, by reacting polystyrene with a sulfonating agent under a specified shear strength in a halohydrocarbon solvent. CONSTITUTION:Polystyrene of an average MW of 200-50000 is sulfonated with a sulfonating agent in a halohydrocarbon solvent under the conditions in which an agitator which can meet the relationships: 0.1<d/l<0.7 and 4<Q/V<400 [wherein d is the diameter of an impeller (m), l is the characteris tic diameter (m) of a mixing/reaction chamber, D is the quantity of discharge of an agitator (m3/min), V is the volume of a solution in the mixing/reaction chamber (m<3>), and Q/V is the number of times of recirculation (I/min)] is used and the shearing force (N/cm<2> falls within a range of 0.08-1.5. As the halohydrocarbon solvents used, 1-2 C aliphatic halohydrocarbons are desirable, and those inert to the sulfonating agent, such as methylene dichloride, carbon tatrachloride and chloroform, can be mentioned as examples.
