Production of carbon fibre from an acrylic fibre.
<??>It consists in applying a greasing agent comprising as essential constituent a derivative of neopentyl alcohol of general formula:

to the acrylic fibre, in heating this lubricated fibre in an oxidising atmosphere to convert it into oxidised fibre, and in heating the oxidised fibre to a higher temperature, in an inert atmosphere, in order to carbonise it.
<??>In the above formula I, R<1>, R<2> and R<3> denote C1-C12 alkyls, Y being a C1-C12 alkyl or a group

<??>This process makes it possible to remove the defects from the acrylic fibre precursor and gives a carbon fibre which has excellent mechanical strength characteristics.
