PURPOSE:To efficiently obtain the titled compound useful as a raw material for medicines, perfumes, etc., by alkylating toluene with isopropanol in the presence of a catalyst carrying an alkali metal oxide on active carbon. CONSTITUTION:Toluene is reacted with isopropanol in the presence of a catalyst carrying one or two or more alkali metal oxides selected from K, Rb, Cs and Fr, particularly cesium oxide on active carbon, e.g. coconut shell based and petroleum based active carbon, etc., preferably in the vapor phase at 350-600 deg.C under ordinary pressure-50kg/cm<2> pressure at 0.1-10.0ml/ml-cat.hr space velocity (expressed in terms of liquid) to afford the aimed compound. The ratio of the isopropanol to the toluene is preferably 0.1-30ml/mol and the amount of the carried metal oxides based on the active carbon is 1-50wt.%. USE:A starting material particularly for 2-(4-isobutylphenyl) propionic acid having anti-inflammatory, analgesic and antipyretic action, etc. |
