Strip-shaped optical waveguides are connected at one end to a coplanar optically conducting layer and arranged such that the axes of the optical waveguides cross over in the region of the layer. With the aid of interdigital electrode arrangements provided on the layer in the crossing regions, reflection or transmission grids are produced in the layer which deflect optical signals irradiated into the layer from an optical wave guide in the direction towards the opening region of another optical waveguide. In the de-energised electrode state, by contrast, the optical signals irradiated into the layer from a strip waveguide die out in the layer. In this way, advantageously unambiguous coupling relationships are obtained between two strip waveguides. <IMAGE>
